Wouldn't winning a third Olympic doubles gold medal — having never lost a set — be worthy of more than the usual celebration? Venus and Serena Williams won Sunday yelled, hugged each other, acknowledged the crowd, but where was the crip walk? If dancing to celebrate is a big moment is good enough for Pat Riley …
Following Serena Williams' gold medal singles victory against Maria Sharapova on Saturday, the Compton, Calif., native danced for a few seconds. Thanks to Twitter and oh so many "oh no she didn't" omments, many found out they had just witnessed the Crip walk.
The clip went immediately up on YouTube and many had to reach for their urban dictionaries. The origins of the move are from the notorious gang feud between the Bloods and the Crips, but has long since gone mainstream. To some it is just a dance, says DJ Quick (Warning: strong language), also from Compton.
Williams said the dance came from the exuberance she was feeling from finally getting Olympic gold. "I didn't know what to do. I was so happy. I didn't plan it; it just happened," Williams said. "It's a big moment. It's a big moment."
